Toyota Earns Prestigious Award for Vehicle Weight Savings

We all know that reducing a vehicle's weight can help improve performance, when done responsibly. Recently, at the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) Management Briefing Seminars (MBS), Toyota took home an Altair Enlighten Award for its pioneering use of a weight-reducing vehicle closure system in the Prius Prime's liftgate.

By increasing the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the inner panels, the Prius Prime's lifgate now weighs 40 percent less than similarly sized aluminum liftgates. This reduction in weight reduction can be directly tied to an increase in the vehicle's battery range, while also making it easier for more people to use the liftgate.

Altair, SAE International and CAR have teamed to present the Altair Enlighten Awards for five years, and they are the automotive industry's only award program that explicitly recognizes the innovations automakers are making in reducing vehicle weight.
